“These flyers claimed Malibu Kids Inc had received government funding for an employment and training scheme that would support young adults by providing job opportunities,” Mr Lawlor said. “Twenty-one local residents paid Mr Hill $99 each to have their lawn mown for one year, in the belief that they were assisting young people from their local community. “Not only was the government program claim untrue, only one of these consumers was actually provided with a lawn mowing service." Mr Lawlor said the majority of consumers have since had their money refunded by Mr Hill. Member for Murrumba Dean Wells said thankfully the local residents have been refunded the money they thought they were putting to a good cause. “Hopefully this fine sends a clear message to people who might be considering lying or acting dishonestly when trying to attract business. “The Office of Fair Trading is committed to delivering a fair and safe marketplace for Queensland consumers and businesses. “Consumers are encouraged to do their research when approached for business by someone they haven’t dealt with before. “Depending on the industry, try to check whether or not the trader is registered with the relevant government body.” Further information about consumer rights is available online at www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au or by calling 13 13 04.
