Queensland man near-fatally crushed days before wedding day tells of agonising recovery

It was meant to be the most joyous time of Toowoomba man Tim Smith and his fiance Kym’s lives.

Instead, Kym was left to endure an 16 agonising days as her betrothed’s life hung in the balance.

Three days before their wedding in 2019, Smith, a builder, was using heavy machinery to clean up the family property where the event was to take place.

He had jumped on a skid-steer loader (bobcat) to try and pull a tank out of a dam.

“The bobcat got stuck in the mud,” he said.

“We got a 30-tonne excavator and tried to pull the bobcat out.

“Somehow I got in the road of the excavator … that’s all I can remember.”
